Mary J. Davis has had a diverse life, geographically, professionally and personally. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska; grew up in Annapolis, Maryland; and lived most of her adult life in a suburb of Philadelphia. She moved to New York in 2008. Finally, she's where she belongs.
Mary attended Rollins College in Florida, transferred to Elmira College in New York, and graduated from Arcadia College in Pennsylvania. She switched majors, going from English to Psychology to Theatre Arts to Elementary Education. After teaching for several years as a reading specialist in public schools, she went to Temple Law School in Philadelphia. She was a litigator in several different areas of law: antitrust class actions, securities regulation, mass disaster litigation, environmental law, real estate malpractice, and insurance defense. Even when working for law firms, she also practiced pro bono law with different public interest firms, including Disabilities Law Project and ACLU. While she no longer practices law professionally, she has continued her work with the ACLU.
Mary's interest in theatre began when she was a little girl. Her mother, Jane Young Davis, wrote children's plays. Mary was involved with Children's Theatre of Annapolis from the
age of 9. Her mother also took her to Washington and New York to see shows. Theatre was a big part of her family's life, and that exposure created a lifelong love for all things Broadway! Once her daughter, Laura, was in school, Mary began coming to New York every Wednesday to see a show. That grew to the occasional weekend getaway, then the frequent weekend getaway, then to moving here when Laura went to college in Florida. Mary found an apartment in the heart of the theatre district so that she was never far from the world she loves. She still sees 4-8 shows a week, subscribes to as many non-profit theatre companies as she can, and sees everything (yes, everything) that is on Broadway and as much Off-Broadway as she can!
Since moving to New York, Mary has begun producing shows herself. It started when she mentioned to Susan Charlotte, founder of Food for Thought, that, "In 3 years, when Laura goes to college, I'd like to get involved with Food for Thought." At the time, Mary was thinking of volunteering, ushering, that sort of thing. But Susan knew a theatre freak when she met one, and immediately got Mary involved in producing 2 shows Susan had written: The Shoemaker starring Danny Aiello; and She's of a Certain Age. Susan and Mary also produced the New York premiere of The Pretty Trap, Tennessee Williams' one act version of Glass Menagerie. Mary and Seth Rudetsky produced James Wesley's Unbroken Circle. She was also a producer for the musical Disaster!, both on and off Broadway. Mary co-produced James Wesley's Art & Science, which had a successful run in Dallas. In addition, she produced David Bryan Colbert's C.O.A.L. at 59E59 in March 2015. In 2016, Mary produced A Persistent Memory by Jackob Hofmann, at Theatre Row. In Spring 2017, MBL produced Jennifer Jasper's Pressing Matters. Jennifer Blackmer's Unraveled was MBL's 2018 production at Theatre Row. In 2019, Mary produced 2 shows, both at 59E59: Smart Blonde by Willy Holtzman, starring the amazing Andrea Burns; Fern Hill by Michael Tucker, starring Jill Eikenberry and John Glover.
In addition, Mary has also invested in several Broadway shows: Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, winner of 2 Tony Awards; M. Butterfly, starring Clive Owen; Angels in America starring Nathan Lane and Andrew Garfield, 3 Tony awards; Mike Birbiglia's The New One; and The Cher Show, winner of 2 Tonys. Currently Mary has 2 shows on Broadway: Tina Fey’s Mean Girls, and Hadestown (winner of 10 Tonys!). Off Broadway investments included: Joan, directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt, and Tim Pinckney's Still at Risk. Mary donated money to get the Broadway for Orlando record made. MBL has also invested in the independent film Evergreen, winner of 5 awards on the festival circuit. Mary has several other plays in the early stages of development. Stay tuned!
Mary is married to Michael Levitan, a statistics professor at Villanova University. They have one daughter, Laura, a graduate of Rollins College in Florida, now living in Los Angeles where she works in the techno music field. Mary has no idea what her husband or daughter do since neither career involves Sondheim.
Joey Monda - Vice President
Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Joey has served as a producer and/or general manager for numerous Broadway, Off-Broadway, and off Off-Broadway productions, concerts and events.
In addition to his work with MBL Productions, Joey was part of the Tony Award winning producing team of Hadestown. Other Broadway producing credits include Slave Play, The Inheritance, The New One and the upcoming Mrs. Doubtfire (all with MBL Productions!). He also worked on the Broadway productions of Disaster! and Allegiance starring George Takei, Lea Salonga and Telly Leung. Additional work includes DR Theatrical Management, Daryl Roth Productions, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the Broadway League, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the Actors Fund, and Broadway Gives Back.
Joey received his BFA in Musical Theatre from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio where he worked with numerous theatres and universities as a performer, music director and accompanist.
